"Deathly Hallows" On Way to Becoming Biggest-Selling HP Book

Amazon.co.uk is reporting today that after the announcement of the title of Book Seven, pre-orders of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows surged to the top of their best seller list. A spokesman for the online retailing giant said today the astonishing response may be an indicator of future sales of the last Harry Potter book.

"To reach No 1 in our best-sellers chart after only eight hours is an incredible achievement.

"Thousands of people in homes and offices across the UK went online to reserve their copy the moment they had the opportunity.

"If the initial response is anything to go by, this could be the biggest-selling Harry Potter of all time."

Please note: As seen via our

Bookies Already Making Odds on Demise of Harry Potter in "Deathly Hallows"

Not ones to let any sense of sentimental holiday spirit stand in the way, bookies are already making odds on the demise of Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The BBC reports one oddsmaker feels that "the general consensus seems to be that Harry is the final Horcrux and to ensure that Voldemort dies he will need to be sacrifice," and thus "most of the early money has been for Harry, who has been cut from 10/1 to 6/1." The article goes on to note that Lord Voldemort is "the 4-5 favourite to kill off the popular character in the seventh book in the series." Other characters from the beloved series are also mentioned:

"Other contenders to kill Harry include Professor Snape at 5-2, Draco Malfroy at 6-1, Ron Weasley at 6-1 and Hermione Granger at 6-1.

Mr Adams added that the bookies have also accepted punts on Ron and Hermione to marry, with Harry as best man, and on Harry to catch the snitch in a Quidditch world cup.

"The oddsmakers hasten to add that all bets "will be void and stake money will be returned if Harry confounds pundits and survives."

Alfonso Cuaron Interview Mentions Ties Between PoA Film and HBP; Expresses Interest in "Deathly Hallows"

Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuaron has given a new interview with SFGate.com where he mentions again his interest in possibly returning to helm a Harry Potter movie. Echoing previous reports, Mr. Cuaron says he recently spoke as well with JKR, saying "I could tell based on our conversation that she is just so excited about No. 7. She was going through a really good stream of writing.'' Alfonso Cuaron also confirmed that indeed, he had ideas while filming PoA that possibly tied into the future books, including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Each time she got wind of a direction he was taking "Prisoner of Azkaban'' in, she would tell him, "That thing you're trying to do sounds very interesting, but I would appreciate it if you don't do it because it would contradict something I'm going to do in book 6.'' Cuarón always honored her requests.

"You are dealing with a woman who has an amazing control of her universe and knows inch by inch that castle," he says.

Working on "Azkaban,'' which many critics consider the best of the Potter films, was "a blast," Cuarón says. "Those were the two most beautiful years of my life. Everything that happens around a J.K. Rowling creation is enveloped in this beautiful, beneficial energy.''

UPDATE: According to this very
short interview from Slashfilm, Mr. Cuaron has expressed interest in directing the film version of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," as he said "Let's see how the seventh book ends up, maybe that one -- maybe." No director has been announced as yet for Half-Blood Prince, which is due to begin filming next summer.

Amazon UK Puts Book Seven on Pre-Order, Sets Price

Several readers have let us know that Amazon.UK has now set a price for Book Seven at £13.99 (or roughly 27.39 USD), and has gone from a "Notify Me" status to an actual "Pre-Order" status. Thanks to reader Roonwit, we also know the UK retailer is telling those who have pre-ordered, amazingly, that there will be an estimated delivery date as "22 Feb 2007 - 23 Feb 2007."

UPDATE: It would seem some clarification is taking place as the page now says "Delivery Date. When you reserve your copy you may see a system generated message specifying the delivery date. In actual fact we do not know when this book will be published. We will keep you up to date as and when we have more information."

Amazon Calls Book Seven "Most Eagerly Awaited Books of All Time"

With the news of the title for the last Harry Potter book now publicly announced, there has been widespread media reaction as you can imagine. Here are just a few of the news stories of interest on the subject:

Amazon.com is the focus of this story from Bloomberg news which highlights the fact that "Amazon said it experienced a surge of activity on its Web site after the announcement, describing it as ``one of the most eagerly awaited books of all time.''

The Telegraph has further comments from the UK Amazon spokesperson who said:"This is the first piece of the jigsaw in the final part of the Harry Potter series," he said. "The book's release will be met with an unprecedented level of excitement - but also a sense of sadness. Over the past 10 years, so many people have been enchanted by the world and characters that JK Rowling has created. It will be like saying goodbye to an old friend."

The Times online reports on the anticipation already by booksellers for a release date of the last book, where they predict huge sales. One spokesperson from Waterstones says:"This is a wonderfully intriguing and ominous title, with all the sense of magic and adventure that any true Potter fan has come to love and expect....But surely the question all Potter fans will want answering as soon as possible is - when can they get their hands on a copy? We don’t know the answer yet, but we’re predicting that 2007 could be a pretty special year for Potter fans all around the world."

Lizo from CBBC Newsround gives us his thoughts on the title of the last book, as he says "I love the title Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it's got a really scary feel to it, without giving too much away." For more on Lizo's thoughts, click here.

Finally, our own Melissa Anelli was interviewed by the Chicago Tribune where she sums up the feelings of many of us by noting "As Potter fans, we're elated and also saddened - this is the last one! It's like being given a fantastic Christmas present on the last Christmas ever."

Here's the dates that the films DVDs will stop being produced:

Dan Radcliffe Would "Walk on Hot Coals" to Work with Yates Again

Harry in Order of the PhoenixDanRadcliffe.com and DanRadcliffef.co.uk received Holiday greetings yesterday -- including a new photo -- from Dan himself. In his letter, Dan thanked the sites for their "honest and straightforward reporting of events this year - leaving the speculation to others." He also said: "As I have now finished on HP5 and am about to take a break, I wanted you to have a copy of my new fan mail photo which will be sent out with a new newsletter from the beginning of next year. It was taken by Emma Hardy who took my photo for the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.

As Christmas approaches, I would again urge my loyal fans not to send me presents but make a donation to Demelza House (which always needs support).

It has been a very exciting year for me. I had a great time making 'Order of the Phoenix' and working again with Gary OIdman, and for the first time Imelda Staunton, was simply fantastic. David Yates was an inspired director who I would walk on hot coals to work with again.

As many of you know I am going on stage next year, to appear in Equus and the letters of support I have received since the announcment, from many fans have been very exciting to read. Thank you for your words of encouragement.

Later next year I will film MY BOY JACK and again am completely thrilled to be working on this fantastic and very moving script. It is going to be a very full year and I will relish every moment."

In other Radcliffe news, Daniel is
slated to present an award at the Australian Film Institute (AFI) awards ceremony on December 7.

Dan on 'Phoenix' & Wanting to Prove Himself as an Actor

Daniel RadcliffeIn a new article with Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe, Dan talks about his wish to prove himself as an actor by taking on different projects like Equus, My Boy Jack and Extras. He also comments on working with Imelda Staunton, David Yates and once again with Gary Oldman and how he wishes to work with Yates in the future.

Dan on working with Imelda Staunton and Gary Oldman:

Any scene really with Imelda Staunton or Gary Oldman has been incredible, just because they're both so brilliant to work with. The thing that I really admire about both of them is the fact that not only are they great actors, but they're also incredibly personable. They'll talk to anyone on the set about anything, and then as soon as they get on the set they're focused and they just act. And they're brilliant, and they're constantly refining their performances, so it's fantastic for me to watch that.

Dan also comments on working once again with Richard Griffiths in Equus next year:

I can't wait to work on Equus with Richard, it will be fantastic to work with him in another capacity other than Uncle Vernon. At the moment I see him for a couple of weeks on every film, bar the fourth, which unfortunately he wasn't in, and then he goes off again and as much as a fantastic actor as he is I never get to spend as much time with him. And so on this I get to spend the first half of next year with him!

Malfoy Moves Up on Forbes' Fictional Fifteen List

Once again Harry Potter character Lucius Malfoy has made an appearance on Forbes wealthiest fictional characters list.

Last year Lucius Malfoy
graced the list at #15, this year at #12:

Wizarding family patriarch best known as advocate for pureblood magicians and for violent hatred of Harry Potter. Caught red-handed burglarizing United Kingdom's Ministry of Magic; now indefinitely incarcerated in Azkaban prison. But imprisonment hasn't hurt his net worth: With the price of gold at record levels, stockpiles of gold galleons have appreciated significantly. Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour reportedly increasing security outside Malfoy's cell in the wake of Dementor guard revolt, fearing escape attempt. Malfoy, unbowed, vows to return to public life: "My race is not yet run." Member since 2005.

Dan talks about Potter Trailer

Daniel RadcliffeThe first teaser trailer for the next Harry Potter film has been released, and Harry himself has been telling Newsround all about it!

Actor Daniel Radcliffe said: "The response I've had from the trailer so far has been very, very positive.

"People do seem to be wanting to see more of the film," he added.

In the teaser there are lots of shots of Harry flying over London on his broomstick with his magical pals, as well as another look at Lord Voldemort.

And there is also a very brief, very murky, blink-and-you'll-miss-it, sneak peak at Harry's kiss with Cho!

Old favourites Sirius Black and Professor Dumbledore also make brief appearances, as does another very nasty piece of work - Bellatrix Lestrange.

Daniel also spoke briefly about the film itself: "It's very different from the fourth one, which was very spectacular.

"This one is a much darker, more internal emotional journey."

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will hit cinemas in July 2007.

USA TODAY Feature on Order of the Phoenix Teaser Trailer

Harry and Cho
The USA Today has now posted online their preview of the teaser trailer for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This article, which will be in papers tomorrow, features a new interview with actor Dan Radcliffe who speaks about the film, and mentions the nefarious Death Eater, Bellatrix Lestrange, played by Helena Bonham Carter.

"She's the person, along with the rest of the Death Eaters, who is responsible for a further tragedy in Harry's life," says Radcliffe. (Readers of the fifth book will know what this tragic event is, but in the interest of keeping the movie's suspense, we won't discuss it here.)

Dan also goes on to describe the infamous snogging scene, when Harry of course kisses Cho Chang.

There are moments Potter fans also will embrace — as Harry has his first kiss with his longtime crush, Cho Chang (Katie Leung).

"It was reported that we did huge amounts of takes, but actually you do that number of takes on any scene," says Radcliffe, whose next, even more grown-up role will be on the London stage in Equus in February. "Once you've covered it from all the camera angles, you've done about 30 takes. But because it's the kiss, it was sort of made out that I had requested to do well over 30 takes."

Movie magic takes on many forms.

Says Radcliffe: "I guess if there's one thing that people will be coming to see the film for, it will be the kiss."

Please note that there are some photos to accompany this article that we will have online soon. The teaser trailer for Order of the Phoenix will be shown in movie theatres tomorrow.

Video Snippet of 'OotP' Preview to be Shown on ABC Family

OotP LogoTo celebrate Christmas U.S. television station ABC Family will be showing the first three Harry Potter movies, including the extended version of Prisoner of Azkaban, the weekend of December 1st. We now have the commercial currently airing on the station which includes scenes from the upcoming Order of the Phoenix.

To see the commercial, click here.

A description can be read below courtesy of
MuggleNet:

The first thing that you see is two (what appear to be) Death Eaters, one with a blue mask and one with a green mask, I believe. It then switches to a scene with Harry in it looking scared and sweaty. Then it switches to a scene with Harry, Hermione, Ron, Ginny, Neville, and Luna riding broomsticks in London right over the Thames River. You see the London Bridge in the background and you see a cruise tour boat that they are flying past. Then it switches to Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the Forbidden Forest backing away from something - it's either Grawp or the Centaurs. Then it switches to Harry, Hermione, Ron, Luna, Neville, and Ginny flying past the Houses of Parliament/Big Ben. And then it switches to Harry flying towards the screen with London in the background, over the Thames River.

News on Book 7 Coming Soon?

HPANA member Anne sent us word that Barnes & Noble have started to receive signs for the seventh Harry Potter book. While her email states that the signs are vague, indicating that fans who pre-order the book will receive a 40 percent discount, it does give hope that news may be forthcoming soon.

Anne's message:

Just to let you know, I had the joy of opening the holiday sign packages at the Barnes and Noble I work at today to discover signs for the seventh book. They're vague and I don't know an exact date, but it means that the company big wigs probably know a date on which to expect more information. So, if nothing else, it's a sign that good news should be headed our way soon. As you can see from the attached photo, the book will be sold at 40% off list price for those who pre-order. Just thought I'd send it along. Feel free to post the photo if you'd like. I know it's not really amazing news but I figured, hey, it's something.

You can see a picture of the signs
here and please don't read anything into this until confirmed by JK Rowling herself or her publishers (Bloomsbury and Scholastic).

Rumor: Harry Potter,The Magical Traveling Museum?

Several weeks ago we told you about the return of the Disney World/Harry Potter rumor, that had the two in talks about creating some sort of joint venture. TLC was able to confirm with reps for JKR that there was "no truth" to the report about a letter of intent to do business.

Today however, not only did this rumor resurface with claims that JKR is still in talks with Disney (despite the denials), but as Disney fansite O-Meon.com
reports, Warner Brothers has also been in touch with Themed Entertainment Association about creating "traveling, interactive museum exhibits based on the Harry Potter films."

Quotage:

"Sources close to the project say a Southern California “experience and entertainment” design firm has already been chosen by the studio to “recreate the world of Harry Potter, witches, and wizards, in a way that immerses whole families in the experience.” Museums around the country, eager to boost attendance, are anticipating talks with the studio in regard to playing host to the exhibit, which promises to educate as well as entertain."

We are trying to obtain additional information on this, and will of course update with more when we can.

Emma Watson at Oxford University

Emma Watson, Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter movies, spoke yesterday at Oxford Union at Oxford University. Emma discussed what the directors taught her and how she's scared of the end of Harry Potter. She also mentions Evanna Lynch, finding the sets exciting, not being happy with blue screen filming and how she fell down the stairs while rehearsing the Yule Ball entrance for Goblet of Fire.

You can read the full report
here but a snippet is below:

Emma said being an actress is about trust. Unlike her character, Emma took three years to let go of her vanity and become Hermione, she said. Initially conscious that she could be teased for wearing the woolly jumpers Hermione had to don, she finally learned to let it all come naturally and fit into the role. Emma loves to learn, and stated this repeatedly throughout the evening.

She identifies the different directors by what they taught her.

'Alfonso Cuarón taught me about beauty', Mike Newell taught her that, 'acting just wasn't enough', and David Yates 'taught me about finding truth.' After five films and many great directors and actors about her to inspire, she has finally got to grips,' she said.

She went on to speak about the nitty gritty of acting, the technical elements so rarely seen in the final product.

'I find blue screen really difficult,' perhaps because it was 'depressing being surrounded by blue all the time,' she said.

J.K. Rowling, A Hero of Our Time

J.K. RowlingIn honor of sixty years of publication, Time Europe has published a special edition of the magazine featuring "60 Years of Heroes" which include Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. In the company of others such as Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pope John Paul II, and Bono, the magazine writes of our favorite author the following:

"Always have faith in yourself. Be true to your friends. And never repot a mandrake plant without wearing earmuffs (their screams are fatal, you know). As any Harry Potter fan knows, you don't need a wand to learn life's most important lessons.

Harry may have been born a wizard, but his journey through adolescence is purely human. For kids, he's a trusted companion during that awkward, angst-ridden adventure called growing up. For grown-ups, his escapades offer the chance to feel like a kid again. And that is J.K. Rowling's greatest trick: remembering the thrills, and fears, of being young.

Starting with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Rowling's six books have been translated into over 60 languages, spawned a series of blockbusting movies and transmogrified a jobless single mom into an international celebrity. But Rowling's real triumph is getting millions of book-shy muggles to start reading again. Her stories can be as sweet as bedtime tales and as dark as nightmares, always alive with sparkle, wit and — above all — fun.

Harry and his friends invite readers into Hogwarts, but it's Rowling's writing that keeps them spellbound. Now she's working on the seventh book — the final one, she says — and fans can't wait to see how it all ends. In a time when everything comes to us in bits and bytes, Rowling has made storytelling cool again. And that is something truly magical."

New Interview with David Thewlis

David Trewlis
UK newspaper The Metro has a new "60 Seconds" interview with actor David Thewlis, who does mention his return appearance as Remus Lupin in the upcoming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. In this article, he discusses his acting career, and says that filming for the fifth Potter movie is almost over. David Thewlis also gives his thoughts on the outcome of Harry in Book Seven as well.

Is it fun to be part of something that has such a massive international following?

I love doing the Harry Potter films. It’s such a big family, everyone knows each other very well and have worked together for so long on these films. The other good thing is you know it’s going to get seen, that it will be in the cinemas. This isn’t always the case with films you make. You know millions of people are going to see it.

Do you think Harry will be killed off in the last book and film?

I think Dan Radcliffe thinks that but I’m not sure. I can’t imagine JK Rowling killing off Harry.
