Twenty-three people who helped victims of the 7 July bombings in London have also been rewarded for their bravery.

They are among a list of people who have been awarded by the Queen for doing something special in their lives.

JK To Start Writing Final Potter

Potter author JK Rowling has revealed she will begin writing the final story of the boy wizard next year.

She says on her official website that she's drawn up a book plan and will start writing in January.

The millionaire says she can't wait to get started but has "mingled feelings of excitement and dread" because she can't imagine life without Harry.

Although JK Rowling may finish the book next year, it's unlikely that it'll be on sale in shops until 2007.

On her website, JK Rowling has started a diary page, where she writes about completing the Potter adventures.

She said: "I contemplate the task with mingled feelings of excitement and dread, because I can't wait to get started, to tell the final part of the story and, at last, to answer all the questions (will I ever answer all of the questions?

"Let's aim for most of the questions); and yet it will all be over at last and I can't quite imagine life without Harry."

She added that her book plan is like "the map of an unknown country".

The first six Harry Potter books have sold more than 300 million copies worldwide in more than 60 languages.

Harry's "Birthplace" to be Commemorated with Plaque

The Scotsman reports that a granite plaque is set to be placed on Nicolson Street in Edinburgh to commemorate the place where J.K. Rowling "famously went to work on her books while still a struggling single mother, as she couldn't afford to heat her flat."

The plaque will feature a photograph of Jo, and will "create a 'Writers Corner' in the heart of the Capital, with memorials to Robert Louis Stevenson and William McGonagall nearby."

A Christmas Present from J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling has left a gift-wrapped message on her desk this Christmas, which brings us glad tidings heralding a hint of things to come on the website, and oh yes, a mention of Book Seven. Jo writes:

DECEMBER 25th

That tired old welcome page was starting to bug me, so I thought I'd give you something new for Christmas. I've tried keeping a diary many times in the past and never got much further than January 15th, but I've been feeling the need for a place to put everyday updates that don't qualify as real 'news'. As ever, if there is a quiet spell you should not take it as a sign that I've given up diary writing, but rather that I am working hard on something a little more eagerly anticipated...For 2006 will be the year when I write the final book in the Harry Potter series. I contemplate the task with mingled feelings of excitement and dread, because I can't wait to get started, to tell the final part of the story and, at last, to answer all the questions (will I ever answer all of the questions? Let's aim for most of the questions); and yet it will all be over at last and I can't quite imagine life without Harry.

However (clears throat in stern British manner) this is no time to get maudlin.

I have been fine-tuning the fine-tuned plan of seven during the past few weeks so that I can really set to work in January. Reading through the plan is like contemplating the map of an unknown country in which I will soon find myself. Sometimes, even at this stage, you can see trouble looming; nearly all of the six published books have had Chapters of Doom. The quintessential, never, I hope, to be beaten Chapter That Nearly Broke My Will To Go On was chapter nine, 'Goblet of Fire' (appropriately enough, 'The Dark Mark'.)

As for this website, I've got plans...you'll find out what they are in due course (constant vigilance, my friends). In the meantime, happy holidays to everyone, and if Father Christmas has already squeezed down your chimney, I hope he left something good.

Also, there have been a few very interesting updates to the
Rumour section, kaboshing some theories on Petunia and Lupin, a few tidbits in the About Me section, while over in her Rubbish section, it addresses that absurd claim that she is group of writers all working under the pen name of JKR, as well as her hating Harry (as if!).

Finally- Woohoo! -a New FAQ Poll to vote on (Book Six spoilers). Enjoy! Thank you JO!

Potter Keeps Kids Away From Harm

Harry Potter's known for casting magical spells on characters in his books but it seems he could be protecting real life children too.

Hospitals have noticed that less children are admitted to their emergency departments on weekends when a new Potter book hits the shelves.

It's thought kids are so busy reading they stay out of trouble!!

But it's feared too much reading and not enough activity could ultimately lead to an increase in obesity.

Doctors at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford found that only 36 children needed treatment when a book was launched compared to 67 children on all other weekends.
They did their research on Saturday, 21, June 2003 and Saturday, 16 July 2005 when The Order of the Phoenix and The Half-Blood Prince came out.

It's now been suggested that a team of talented writers should get together to write similar books as a form of "distraction therapy" to prevent more accidents.

GOF Tops POA, Surpasses $700m Worldwide

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire came in at fourth place at this weekend's box office, raking in $5.9 million and surpassing Prisoner of Azkaban's domestic gross in the process. Peter Jackon's King Kong was expected to be stiff competition, and although it did top the box office this week, its opening gross was less than half of Harry's.

GOF also passed the $700 million mark worldwide, another key milestone for the film. The upcoming holiday season should propel its worldwide gross to - at the least - $800 million, and should also push its domestic totals past that of Chamber of Secrets in 2002.

Real Potter 'Peril' Clock Coming

A clock very similar to the magical one in the Weasley family kitchen in the Harry Potter books could be a reality.

Computer company Microsoft has come up with a device they're calling the Whereabouts Clock, which could show where family members are.

The clock works by tracking mobile phones, so could show if children were school or on their way home.

So far there is no news if the special clock will have a settings for hospital, prison or mortal peril.

Microsoft researchers have been showing off some of their latest ideas in Belgium, and inventor Abigail Sellen is behind this one.

She said: "We noticed in our studies of family life that it was important to know - when you come home from work for example - are my kids still at school, have they left school yet, has my husband left work yet, shall I get the dinner on? This kind of thing.

"Actually knowing where your family is very important to family life."

At the moment it's more of an idea than something you can buy now, but a real version could be with us in a couple of years.

Cast Watch: New Ralph Fiennes Interview

Fresh from the press junket for The White Countess, Ralph Fiennes has a new interview in Newsday. In it, he talks about his new film, being nominated (or not) for prestigious awards, and about basing characters on their outward appearance. Which, of course, brings us to Voldemort!

"He's a cosmically evil guy who's been given a new body, and Fiennes says 'Goblet of Fire' director Mike Newell told him that the villain 'hasn't had a body like this for ages.' So, adds Fiennes, he decided to put in little bits of business, such as 'feeling his head, his breathing, it's a new thing to breathe like that. Enjoying how he moves. And adding to that this sort of energy of revenge. The delight that 'I've got my power back.''"

Order of the Phoenix Casting Complete

Danielle Symonds of Enchantment Casting, a theatrical agency in South Wales that has represented many HP hopefuls in the past, let us know that all open casting and auditions for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix are over, and therefore, she "wouldn't advise anyone to apply for parts now."

She also provided us with a few more OotP casting updates. Among them:

The roles of Nymphadora Tonks and Kingsley Shacklebolt have been cast.
CBBC Newsround reported several weeks ago that two actors were "in talks" for both of these roles, but they have now been cast. We won't know who has the roles until a press release is issued, however.

They are in "the very final stages" of casting for the roles of young Lily, Snape, Lupin, James, Peter, Sirius, and all others who appear in that pensieve scene.

Marietta Edgecombe and Lavender Brown are not currently known to be included in the film, but they may end up having small bits here and there.

Warner Bros. has all child extras needed. Adult extras will be cast after Christmas.

Update: As is stated on Enchantment's website, they are not a part of Warner Bros. nor do they work on the Harry Potter movies, so please do not e-mail them for further information about Harry Potter casting.

The Genetic Theory of Harry Potter

This summer, we told you about an article that appeared in "Nature" magazine about the heritability of wizardry. That article was featured in this week's New York Times Magazine as one of the "most noteworthy ideas of the past twelve months." The article includes a great chart showing the genetic chain of the Evans/Potter/Dursley family, and concludes,

" . . . Rowling, whom religious fundamentalists have pillorioed for glamorizing witchcraft, may well be preaching a far more subversive message, one that leads young readers to pursue the study of heredity, genes and -- inevitably -- evolution."

Thanks, Mom! ;-D

In November CBBC Newsround revealed that producers have narrowed the search down to five girls.

This followed a process that saw casting staff visiting schools and looking at photographs sent in to Warner Brothers.

Imelda Staunton is tipped to be Professor UmbridgeOver the past few weeks, several sites and message boards on the internet have featured teenagers saying that they are one of the final five with many of them posting photographs of themselves.

Girls who are really in the last few have been asked to keep the news secret and Warner Brothers say that as far as they are aware, none of the names or photographs of the girls genuinely in the last five have appeared on any website.

Other casting news is expected early next year.

Imelda Staunton is already known to be the front runner for the part of Professor Umbridge. Other parts to be cast include Tonks and Kingsley Shacklebolt.

Brendan Gleeson Attends Irish Fundraiser

At an event today in Dublin's Trinity College, Brendan Gleeson (Mad-Eye Moody) made an appearance supporting Chernobyl Children's Project International. A Leaky reader attended the fundraiser and wrote this report:

Students were escorted by House Ghosts and House Founders to Classes given by Hogwarts Teachers in full dress, owls flew over the huge oak dining tables (by 17th century paintings!) and Brendan Gleeson came for two hours! We introduced him as Professor Moody's Muggle twin brother, because he thought no one would recognise him without his make-up! The room errupted when he came in! His agent told me people were screaming for him all month and we were the only thing he did! It was great for a few Potterheads in Dublin to achieve true magic on such a great scale.

On a related note, Gleeson recently did an interview with the
LA Times discussing his role in the Goblet of Fire movie. He also said that he would like to return for Movie 5.

Lucius Malfoy: Forbes Man of Wealth

In a hilarious yet interesting article, Forbes has posted an updated list of their wealthiest top fifteen fictional characters, with none other than Potter foe Lucius Malfoy holding the last spot with a reported net worth of $900 Million. From a dateline in the North Sea, the article reports that the nefarious Death Eater, now imprisoned in Azkaban, saw his wealth multiply despite his incarceration, noting his fortune has "increased nearly 30% over the last year. It's a major vindication for the 51-year-old wizard, and an indication that Malfoy's portfolio--and his mission to destroy Harry Potter--still has lots of life left in it." According to Forbes, Mr. Malfoy has gained his wealth, not by investing in traditional Wizarding markets, such as Niffler Futures, but rather by investing in Muggle companies such as Wal-Mart, Microsoft, and Halliburton.

And the value of Malfoy's personal possessions has appreciated significantly. Since the return of Lord Voldemort, artifacts and tools of the Dark Arts have become hugely popular, trading briskly in secondary markets like eBay (nasdaq: EBAY - news - people ) and Borgin and Burke's. As the patriarch of an ancient family, Malfoy is reputed to hold a wealth of valuable objects. Despite repeated searches of Malfoy Manor, his home in Wiltshire, the Ministry of Magic has been unable to find any prohibited items--but sources close to the family say they still possess countless treasures.

The Making of GoF: Dragons, Voldemort and More

There are a number of features online now about the work done regarding the technical aspect of making the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Firefilm. Several of the production companies used to make the special effects used in the fourth Potter movie have detailed the astonishing work and effort that went into creating these impressive effects.

First, the Christian Science Monitor has
this article about Industrial Light & Magic and the making of the Dragons for the film.

Finally, after three to five months of preparation, the dragon had texture and color and was moving well. It was ready to start "shot production." This is when the dragon is manipulated into film scenes, "acting" alongside the real actors - in this case Harry, who was trying to accomplish a tournament task."The shot production went on for another nine months," Alexander says. The whole process involved at least 50 people for more than a year."

Next, the Moving Picture Company has a very cool feature on their website about the impressive 216 shots they created for Goblet , including the Maze, the graveyard scene, and the 21 foot snake slythering through the opening sequence of the film. They also worked on some 80 shots of Voldemort alone, and you can also see a new still photo of the Dark Lord on their website. To access this scary photo via this link, click either flash or html, then on the bottom photo of Harry, then again. The Voldemort photo is located where is says "more images."

Framestore CFC also has
an impressive feature online as well, about the work they did to create special effects for the film, especially for the Second Task, Rita's Quill, and the flying carriage. For the amazing underwater sequence, they delivered over six minutes of specialised footage, including all the digitally created Grindylows.

Finally, reader Ian let us know about
his blog where he has some additional Goblet of Fire VXF mentions and interviews. Thanks Ian!

J.K. Rowling: The Woman, The Myth

That's right, guys. According to this Norwegian paper, J.K. Rowling is an elaborate illusion, cooked up by big companies as part of a worldwide conspiracy to sell books - because we all know you can't do that without tricking people.

This article gets our long-ago-forgotten-but-brought-back-when-truly-mind-numbingly-necessary Vernon Dursley Award, for the denial and cynicism when faced with magic and imagination. Congratulations, Norwegian person!

Now, off to trash that
interview, since it clearly didn't really happen... She sure looked the part...and seemed to know something about Potter, too... Well, rats.
